Sizing

All Cloth Bum Kids modern cloth nappies are designed to be OSFM (One Size Fits Most) and will fit from about 4kg up to 15kg. They may fit smaller or larger sizes depending on the body shape, as these sizes are a guide only. The great thing about a OSFM nappy is that if you have two children of different sizes in nappies, they can be adjusted to suit both children. It is also the most cost effective way to buy cloth nappies as the stash will last from 1 month of age until the child toilet trains.

How Many Nappies Will I Need?

The size of your stash depends on a few things including the age of your baby, amount of times you plan to change per day, how often you wash, and if you plan to use cloth full or part-time. Below is a guide to minimum amounts and although it may seem like a lot of nappies you will be surprised how quickly bub gets through them! The size of your stash is a personal choice and although its probably not a good idea to have less than what is stated, you can really have as many nappies as you want!

If you are planning on using fitted nappies full time for your newborn:

  • Minimum of 26 newborn size fitted nappies
  • Minimum of 8 newborn size covers

This is a good sized stash for a newborn baby, washing the nappies every second day.

Newborns need between 10-12 changes per day, and it’s advisable to have a few spare in case bad weather prolongs the drying time or bub has some good poo-splosions! Generally with covers you alternate between two each day, one on the bub and one airing ready for the next change, plus another on hand in case of accidents and then another in the wash. Washing every second day, this means 8 is a good minimum. Some people (myself included as my son has eczema) use a different cover at each change, and some use less than the above amount. It is a personal choice and over time you will find the right balance to suit you and your baby.

If you plan to use cloth part-time then adjust the above amount of nappies needed by deciding how many cloth you would use each day and how many disposables.

If you are planning on using fitted and/or AI2 nappies full time for your baby:

  • Minimum of 24 OSFM fitted/AI2 nappies
  • Between 6-8 covers in either medium or large size (if using fitted nappies)

This size stash will get you through with washing nappies every second day. Most babies need between 6-10 changes per day depending on their age and nappy habits (are they a heavy wetter etc). This also allows for spares in case bad weather prolongs the drying time or bub does lots of poos.
Generally with covers you alternate between two each day, one on the bub and one airing ready for the next change, plus another on hand in case of accidents and then another in the wash. Washing every second day, this means 6-8 is a good minimum. Some people (myself included as my son has eczema) use a different cover at each change, and some use less than the above amount. It is a personal choice and over time you will find the right balance to suit you and your baby. If using only AI2 nappies then you don’t need any covers at all. If you plan to use a combination of fitteds and AI2's then decide how many of each you would like and buy accordingly.

If you plan to use cloth part-time then adjust the above amount of nappies needed by deciding how many cloth you would use each day and how many disposables.

More than one child in nappies?

If you have two babies of different ages in nappies at once aim to have 35 nappies minimum. If you have twins in newborn size a good idea is to buy double the amount that one newborn would need.

Which for when?

There aren't too many hard and fast rules when it comes to which type of nappy and when to use it.Fitted nappies are better at keeping liquid poos in the nappy and not on clothing or bedding, while AI2's are better for older babies who like to wriggle and don't want to hold still for change time. Fitteds are great at night with a fleece or wool cover as this provides the most breathable option, most AI2's will not be absorbant enough to last an entire night without extra boosting.

For more detail on each please see below.

Fitted Nappy

A fitted nappy is made of entirely absorbent materials and requires a cover to be waterproof. Fitted nappies are great, especially for newborns and small bubs who have very liquid poos, as the separate cover provides a second barrier to anything that may leak out of the nappy. During the warmer months or when at home, a fitted nappy can be used without a cover, to provide a 100% breathable nappy.
Cloth Bum Kids fitted nappies are made of bamboo velour, flannelette and quilters cotton. Bamboo is used as it is a sustainable and very fast growing crop. It is grown without fertilisers or any harsh chemicals. Bamboo is also antibacterial and antifungal.
Quilters cotton is used for the outside layer of the nappy, as the vibrant colours and lovely patterns make great looking nappies. The quilters cotton can also be washed over and over without fading.
The inside layer of the nappy (against bubs skin) is made using bamboo velour, which is a very soft and silky feeling material. It will stay soft after repeated washing and so is great next to bubs skin.
Flannelette is used as the hidden layer of the nappy, as it is absorbent and trim.
The trifold in each nappy is made using bamboo velour and bamboo fleece.

AI2 Nappy (All In Two)

An AI2 nappy is made to be waterproof without the need of an additional cover. AI2 nappies are very easy to use, almost identical to a disposable nappy.

There are a few choices in materials when it come to an AI2, as listed below. The outside layer can be made of, minkee, fleece, quilters cotton, or denim.

  • Minkee is very soft and luscious, like a mink blanket but softer and comes in lots of colours and patterns.
  • Fleece is very soft and snugly. It’s very breathable and is great for overnight use.
  • Quilters cotton, denim, AI2’s are fabulous as a ‘show off nappy’ with a cute singlet or under a dress. ClothBumKids cotton and denim outers have been tested and last on average 3 hours without any signs of wicking moisture onto clothing.

The inside layer (against bubs skin) is made of microfleece or microchamois. There is a hidden layer of PUL (Polyurethane Laminate) in each AI2 nappy, this is the breathable waterproof layer. It is completely different to the PVC covers and pilchers of the old days!!

Covers

Covers are used over fitted, and are made of fleece, or minkee/PUL combination. Occasionally there will be knitted covers available on the ClothBumKids website, these are ideal for overnight, but are great at anytime as they are natural and extremely breathable.
